Valentine’s Day is almost here; a day of expressing and celebrating love in all its forms. But love is so much more than flowers, chocolates, or grand gestures. Love is sacred- woven into the very fabric of the universe. It’s timeless, and ever-present. For centuries, cultures have shared stories of divine, eternal love- stories that speak not only of passion, but also of devotion, sacrifice, friendship, and transformation.
In honour of this season of love, I’m diving into three sacred love stories: that of Aphrodite and Adonis, Isis and Osiris, and Psyche and Eros. These myths offer more than just romance; they offer wisdom about how love can transcend time, endure challanges, and transform us in the process. How can these ancient tales speak to us today, in our busy, often fractured modern world?

Aphrodite & Adonis: Passion and the Cycles of Love.

Love is not only about the moments of bliss, but about understanding that the heart’s journey is as much about loss and renewal as it is about passion.

Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of love and beauty, falls for the beautiful mortal Adonis. His beauty and charm is said to rival the gods themselves. Their love is intense and filled with passion but also marked by tragedy. Adonis is wounded and dies- leaving Aphrodite to grieve. This myth teaches that love does not end with death however- Adonis is reborn each year and is a symbol of the eternal cycles of life, death and rebirth.

This story teaches us that love- like life itself- is both fleeting and eternal. It’s passionate, intense- but it’s also full of loss and therefore renewal. How often do we experience moments of intense love- moments that might feel like they will last forever, only to eventually fade away, or change? This story reminds us, that even when love seems to end, it leaves an imprint on our hearts and soul, shaping us into who we are meant to be.

Ritual Idea: A Love and Renewal Ritual. This Valentine's season, take a moment to honour the loves that have shaped you- both past and present. Light a candle for those love stories- romantic or otherwise- that have impacted your soul. Allow yourself to grieve the losses, celebrate the growth, and set an intention for new love to bloom in your life.

Isis & Osiris: Love Beyond Death.

If love is truly eternal, it must also endure the shadows of life. What does it mean to love beyond the surface of things, beyond the visible, and into the deeper places of the soul?

Isis and Osiris share a love that transcends the mortal world. When Osiris is betrayed and mudered by his brother Seth, Isis- his devoted wife- refuses to let go. She embarks on a journey to resurrect him, ultimately giving birth to their son, Horus, before Osiris takes his place in the Underworld.
This powerful myth teaches us that love is not bound by the physical realm. It’s sacred, eternal, and holds the power of transformation. Even death cannot sever the connection between Isis and Osiris. In our modern world, where loss is a part of life, this myth reminds us that love is bigger than any one moment, person, or circumstance. True love transcends time, and the bond we share with others- whether through life or death- is unbreakable.

Self-Love Practice: A Letter of Devotion. Take a moment to write a letter to yourself from a place of deep love and devotion, just as Isis might have written to Osiris. What would you say to yourself if you were to honour your own soul with the same devotion that Isis had for her beloved?

Psyche & Eros: The Journey to Divine Love.

The journey to love is not always easy, but it is always transformative. What have your personal trials taught you about the nature of love, trust, and self-discovery?

Psyche, a mortal woman in this Greek story, wins the love of the God Eros, yet is forbidden to look upon his true form. Driven by curiosity and desire, she disobeys and the result is a series of trials that challenge her in every way. In the end, her journey- full of changes, growth, and transformation- culminates in her divine union with Eros.

This myth reveals that love is not simply about finding someone to adore. Love is a journey- full of twists and turns- and a process that requires trust, patience, and self-discovery. Psyche’s path reminds us that love is earned and tested. Through our own trials, we come to understand love’s deeper and truer meaning. It’s not about perfection, but about growth and transformation.

Journal Prompt: Reflect on the tests you've face in your journey with love. How have these challenges shapes your understanding of love- whether romantic or self-love? What lessons have you learned, and how have they helped you to evolve?
